What the instrument list actually means for a small account
A list of a hundred-plus instruments looks like a promise of choice, but in practice a trader works with three or four of them. The list matters for a different reason: it decides what is open when you are awake. Currency pairs trade around the clock from Monday morning to Saturday morning; gold and the major indices follow the sessions of the exchanges behind them; single stocks open for a few hours a day that fall in the middle of the Indonesian night. Crypto is the exception that never closes.
Cost is the second filter and it splits the list in half. Major currency pairs and gold carry the tightest spreads because that is where the volume is. Exotic pairs and single stocks cost several times more per round trip, and no account type changes that ordering — it moves the charge between the spread and a commission, but the ranking between instruments stays.
The practical advice is unglamorous: pick one or two instruments, learn how they move at the hours you can actually watch them, and ignore the rest of the list until that pair is boring.
