Installing it is the short part: the terminal shows no price and no balance until it is connected to one specific Exness trading account, and the details it asks for — the account number, the platform password set for that account and the trade server it sits on — all come from the Personal Area. The Exness build already carries the trade servers, so the server is chosen from a list rather than typed in.
What the MetaTrader 4 desktop build runs on and asks for
- MetaTrader 4 for Windows is a 32-bit program, and it installs the same way on the 32-bit and the 64-bit edition of Windows 10 — an older machine that cannot run a 64-bit terminal still runs this one.
- The build offered for an Exness account already carries the Exness trade servers, so the server is picked from a list at the first sign-in instead of being typed in by hand.
- Real and demo accounts sit on different trade servers, and choosing the wrong one is what most refusals at the first sign-in turn out to be.
- Custom indicators and expert advisors for this terminal are .ex4 files kept in the MQL4 folder of the terminal data folder; the .ex5 files built for MetaTrader 5 do not load here.
- Nothing has to be carried across from an old computer: the trading account, its balance and its trade history sit with Exness, so a freshly installed terminal shows them as soon as it is authorised.

Why the terminal turns the details down
A refusal at the first sign-in is almost always about which account is being offered, not about the file that was installed. The Personal Area has its own sign-in for the client portal, while each trading account underneath it carries a separate number and a separate platform password, and the desktop terminal only ever accepts the second pair. When the details are certainly right and the terminal still will not connect, a free demo account is the simplest test to run. A demo opened in the Personal Area reaches the same desktop terminal, so if it signs in on that machine, the program is sound and the search goes back to the live account rather than to the download.

After the installer: putting the terminal on the account
- Open the terminal once setup has finished. It asks to be put on a trading account before it will show anything live.
- Give it the account details set out above, and take that account’s own entry from the server list the terminal already carries.
- Read what happens next: an authorised terminal starts streaming prices and shows the account balance, while a refusal means one of those details does not match the account.
